ALS is a progressively degenerative neuromuscular disease that often begins with muscle twitching, wasting, or weakness in the limbs or as slowed speaking or swallowing. Approximately 14,000-15,000 Americans live with the disease and life expectancy after diagnosis is two-to-five years. There is no effective treatment, no cure, and it is always fatal. Because of the relentless nature of the disability that comes with ALS, patients typically face an overwhelming challenge of physical, emotional, economic, financial and family strain. The entire unit of a family, circle of friends, neighbors, and community are often heavily relied upon to live with ALS, which is why our goal is to raise awareness and leave ALS better than we found it with the Live Like Lou Foundation!

Hall of Famer first baseman Lou Gehrig became a Phi Delta Theta brother during his days at Columbia University. Ever since, the Fraternity has been proud to claim Gehrig as their own and has raised millions in support of the cause of ALS on their campuses and on an international scale. In 2018, Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity and the grassroots organization LiveLikeLou, founded by Phi Delt Brother Neil Alexander, joined forces to launch the Live Like Lou Foundation.

Lou Gehrig said, "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth," when he retired from baseball on July 4, 1939, due to ALS.

Phi Delt brother and Live Like Lou founder Neil Alexander was inspired and said, "I feel lucky too," when he faced the same disease nearly 80 years later. Both men lived their lives with courage, strength, and gratitude. And both men died from a disease that needs a cure.

Lifts for Lou
The Ohio Eta Chapter of Phi Delta Theta is hosting its annual Lifts for Lou weightlifting competition on March 25th from 12-4 p.m. All proceeds will be going to the Live Like Lou Foundation. A donation can be made by the participant’s sponsors or the participant themselves for every rep done, every pound lifted, or whatever they set as their goal. Participants can choose from any number of events including bench presses, squats, deadlifts, push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, running, or anything they set their sights on. We will be selling t-shirts for the event and there will be prizes for the most donations, most sponsored contestants, top performers, and more.

About the Live Like Lou Foundation
The Live Like Lou Foundation was established in 2017 as a national nonprofit with a vision to leave ALS better than we found it. Named in honor of MLB Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig, a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Live Like Lou supports ALS families, funds emerging researchers seeking meaningful treatments and cures for ALS, and helps generate awareness of Lou Gehrig’s disease. In the face of his ALS diagnosis, Lou Gehrig continued to live his life with courage, determination, and gratitude... this is what we mean when we say, Live Like Lou.
