Four Springers Need Us. Please Help Them Heal.

Leia, Luke, Obie and Lando have just come into ESRA’s care in Ohio—and all four desperately need us. We are only beginning to understand the extent of their medical needs, but we already know their road to recovery will be long and costly. We have set an initial fundraising goal of $30,000 to give these four Springers the veterinary care they desperately need.

They came from the home of an elderly person who suffered a medical emergency and became incapacitated. Thankfully, someone cared enough to request a welfare check. We can only imagine what might have happened to these dogs otherwise.

All four are incredibly scared. Despite everything they have endured, they have shown no behavioral issues—just fear and uncertainty. They aren’t comfortable on leashes, and two were so frightened they had to be carried from our volunteer’s car into the veterinary office.

Their medical needs are significant.

Leia, believed to be about 9 years old, is our greatest concern. She is anemic, her recent spay incision is irritated, and she has additional mammary tumors that must be removed—but only when she is stable enough to undergo another surgery. Yet somehow, through all of this, Leia is the most outgoing of the four. Her little tush still wiggles.

Lando, believed to be between 3 and 5 years old, has raised nodules, scabs, and dry skin. What may have begun as an infection appears to have developed into chronic skin disease. He will need surgery to correct entropion, a painful condition in which the eyelid turns inward and irritates the eye.

Obie’s condition is heartbreaking. Also believed to be between 3 and 5 years old, his skin disease is so severe that he is essentially naked. His veterinarian has seen only one other case this bad, and we don’t yet know whether his fur will ever grow back. He is extremely shy and frightened.

All four have serious ear conditions requiring treatment and are currently receiving antibiotics and antifungal medications. Their veterinary evaluations are continuing, and we expect months of medical care, treatment and recovery ahead.

We are incredibly grateful that two volunteers have already stepped forward to foster when the dogs are medically ready. Obie and Lando will initially need to remain together, so if you are interested in fostering, please let us know.

Their road to recovery is just beginning.

These four dogs will need months of veterinary care, medication, procedures and healing. The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project, an all-breed rescue in Warren, OH, which originally received the dogs, began some of their veterinary care. But because their evaluations are still underway, we don’t yet know the full extent of what lies ahead.

This is what ESRA does. We step in when a Springer needs us, regardless of age, medical condition or how difficult the road ahead may be. Our volunteers transport, foster, coordinate medical care and do whatever is necessary to give these dogs a chance.

But we can only do it because people like you step in with us.

Please help us raise $30,000 for Leia, Luke, Obie and Lando. Whether it’s $10, $25, $50, $100 or more, every donation moves these four frightened Springers closer to comfort, healing and the loving homes they deserve.

Please donate today. They need us now. ❤️🐾
