Okihi Animal Care
🐐 The Okihi Animals
The animals are part of the heartbeat and vibe of Okihi. Every visitor seems to gravitate toward the herd, and a beautiful connection naturally unfolds.
We love watching children giggle with excitement as they feel the soft touch of a goat’s lips taking grain from their hands, or witnessing the moment a child summons the courage to pet a horse — walking away more confident from that simple, powerful connection.
Our herd is given love, shelter, and thoughtful care, supported by the community that makes it all possible. In turn, the animals give back. We sell fresh eggs from our chickens and baby chicks hatched right here on-site. All manure is composted and used to enrich the soil as we restore the health of the land throughout Okihi.
Although most of the animals are our ambassador animals and will live their full life here along side us, we also thoughtfully harvest a small number of animals each year — creating a living example of what it means to have a loving, mindful connection from food to table.
The aniamsl also roationally graze the land to help reduce fire risk in areas of high invasive grass and trees. Over time helping us to restore the natural landscape of California native plants we replant each year. The animals are an integral part of every outdoor program we host for youth, teaching lessons about care, nutrition, and life cycles, while deepening their connection to the natural world and the animals themselves.
