Two tiny barn kittens, Major Tom and Lieutenant Dan, came to us at just 4 weeks old, weighing in at one pound each, with badly injured eyes, and we did not know the cause.

At first, things were looking hopeful. With round-the-clock care, the brothers were gaining weight and growing stronger—exactly what they needed in order to prepare for corrective surgery. But just one week before their procedures, EVERYTHING CHANGED.

Both kittens’ eyes suddenly worsened. The swelling grew severe, infections set in, and their eyes began leaking pus and bloody tears. They became lethargic, their appetites lessened, and they were clearly uncomfortable.

There was no more time to wait. To save them, our team had to act immediately. Each kitten underwent eye enucleations—meaning both Major Tom and Lieutenant Dan lost an eye. 💔

THE GOOD NEWS: their surgeries were a success. Today, these resilient little brothers are recovering and adjusting to life as one-eyed wonders. They’re safe and slowly regaining their playful kitten spirits.

THE BAD NEWS: their emergency care left us with a $2,000 veterinary bill we hadn’t planned for.
