Join Indigo Arts Alliance’s Spring Artists in Residence Thania Petersen and Krina Patel in exploring how they merge research, visual arts, and community stories into their creative practices.
This day-long event begins with a printmaking session, from 3-4pm, led by Krina Patel. As a practicing multimedia artist and researcher, Dr. Patel designs and develops inclusive community based arts projects collaboratively with educators and healthcare practitioners. Dr. Patel’s current project, ‘Our Health, Our Memories, Our Stories’ creates awareness among healthcare providers and the local community of residents of the MENA region, Asian and Latin diaspora about the importance of arts, culture and living heritage in mental health and well-being.
Then guests are invited to be seated for an Artist Talk between 5-6pm where Artists-in-Residence, Krina Patel and Thania Petersen, will be in conversation about their individual practices. Thania is a multidisciplinary artist who uses photography, performance and installation to address the intricacies and complexities of her identity in contemporary South Africa. Petersen’s reference points sit largely in Islam and in creating awareness about its religious, cultural and traditional practices. Her work unpacks contemporary trends of Islamophobia through her analysis of the continuing impact of colonialism, European and American imperialism, and the increasing influence of right-wing ideologies. The day's activities are concluded by a potluck style dinner, at 6pm in which attendees are welcome to bring a contribution to the meal, while enjoying offerings from the artists.
