Thank you for deciding to be a part of the second “Jacob and Friends” fundraiser. This year we will be raising money for individuals and families that are currently undergoing cancer treatment at the Solinsky Center for Cancer Care at the Elliot in Manchester, NH.

A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Krissy Jordan and Melissa Nickola. Krissy is the Manager of Oncology Services and Program Development and Melissa is the Oncology Social Worker for the Solinsky Center. In short, this means that both of them spend the majority of their time working with people who are struggling financially while undergoing various cancer treatments. When talking to Krissy, she mentioned that a lot of their patients lose their jobs shortly after their diagnosis due to the aggressiveness of the treatment plans or surgery. And with most people living paycheck to paycheck, you can imagine the financial damage this could cause.

Knowing this, our goal for this year’s fundraiser is so important that we decided to put it in the name: “Operation $30k”

Jacob and Friends is challenging twelve generous friends, their pages listed above, to each raise $3,000 while also training to complete a half or full marathon on November 10th at the annual Manchester City Marathon. If every person achieves their fundraising goal, we will blow by our team goal of $30,000.

With this sizable amount of money, we will be able to help 10+ patients get back on the right track. Depending on their current situation, it could help them pay their rent, a past due electric bill, fix their car or even buy groceries for the next few months.

For most of them, this is just the beginning of their journey since the financial burden that is inherited with a cancer diagnosis, or treatment plan, does not always end once the treatment is done. Sometimes this financial damage could negatively affect a person/family for the rest of their life. Although the medical bills are usually the first shock, as mentioned before, patients often lose their job or are forced to take time out of work to help their child or partner fight this terrible disease. Not to mention, the medical scans and follow up appointments that usually accompany them for 5+ years, and in some cases, the rest of their life. BUT, because of generous donations like yours, we can help ease the financial burden that is placed on these patients and their families, at least for the time being.
