Since January 20, 2025, there has been a total halt to refugee arrivals to the United States. However, there are still legal pathways for people to escape persecution and start new lives. Through a partnership with No One Left Behind, the Bennington County Multicultural Community Center will welcome an Afghan family of three on May 27th!

This family has Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) status which will allow them to travel to the United States. This status is reserved for those who worked most directly with the US military in Afghanistan. The father is a medical doctor who has worked providing medical screenings for other SIV holders to facilitate their own exit processes. The mother in the family is pregnant and in her first trimester. They already have one child who will turn four this summer. They are now in Pakistan awaiting travel to the United States.

The federal program that supported newly arrived refugees and SIV holders during their first three months in the United States was the first federal program cut by the new administration. Your generous support will supplement that three month program providing money that will go directly to the family to cover initial expenses upon arrival to the United States as well as fund the case management, housing and employment support, volunteer coordination, and cultural orientation provided by staff at BCMCC. Through your contributions, this family can receive the welcome they deserve!
