Give the Gift of Literacy to a Widow in the Dominican Republic

In the Dominican Republic, many widows in our ministry never had the chance to learn to read or write. Without this basic skill, daily life can be an uphill battle — from reading a Bible verse to helping a grandchild with homework or even signing their own name.

Our Widow’s Literacy Program is changing that story.

Over the course of six months, fifteen widows will meet each week to learn, practice, and grow together. Guided by our dedicated teachers, each woman will gain the confidence and ability to read, write, and understand basic math. More than a class, it’s a journey toward dignity, independence, and hope.

How the Program Works

Each lesson builds on the last, helping every woman progress at her own pace:

Month 1: Learn and master vowels and consonants, beginning to form words.
Month 2: Read and write simple words, including their own names.
Month 3: Begin reading and writing short stories.
Month 4: Grow in fluency, comprehension, and written expression.
Month 5: Learn addition and subtraction.
Month 6: Build confidence in multiplication and division.

Classes include homework, group review, and encouragement from peers — ensuring no one is left behind.

Each widow receives her own books, notebooks, pencils, crayons, and whiteboard — simple tools that open the door to lifelong learning.
