Back to Our Roots is a cultural celebration and empowerment program designed to reconnect youth of African descent with their heritage, history, and identity. This event is about reclaiming pride, honoring traditions, and inspiring the next generation through African-centered storytelling, music, art, and community connection.

The event is organized by the African Center's youth volunteers (four high school students). This is their rationale for creating this event.

Growing up as African children, we were constantly surrounded by our culture, yet we never seemed to be fully a part of it. This feeling of disconnect left us seeking ways to understand and celebrate our culture. As children of African immigrants, we firsthand know how difficult it is to connect to our roots, especially while growing up in environments where our cultures weren’t always seen, represented, or celebrated. That’s why we created Back to Our Roots: a cultural festival that highlights African culture through food, music, education, and community. This event is not just about celebration, but also about reconnection—for ourselves, for our peers, and for the next generation. Our back-to-school drive is a key part of this mission: we want to equip local youth not just with supplies, but with pride in where they come from and a strong sense of identity as they step into the school year. By blending celebration with support, Back to Our Roots reminds our youth that they belong, they matter, and their cultures are worth honoring.
