Corporate Accountability Lab (CAL) unleashes the creative potential of the law to protect people and the planet from corporate abuse. Our vision is of an equitable, inclusive global economy that prioritizes human thriving and a healthy planet over private profit. CAL was founded in response to the crisis of widespread corporate abuse of human rights and the environment and disappearing legal tools to hold corporations accountable. In the midst of this ongoing crisis, public interest lawyers and the broader social justice community are too often overburdened with work using existing tools and lack the time, resources, and space to come up with creative strategies for broad impact. CAL works to change that through our unique human-centered legal design process that fosters innovation and the development of new legal strategies.

As movement lawyers, we work with communities to investigate and document corporate abuse, identify what justice looks like, and determine how we can best leverage the law to achieve it. We then deploy a range of legal strategies to hold corporations accountable and advance community-led demands for justice. Sometimes this looks like amplifying an issue and building power through human rights investigations, coalition-building, and advocacy. In other cases, we seek remedy through petitioning government agencies, bringing cases against corporations, collaborating with civil society organizations across the globe, and identifying new strategies in a variety of jurisdictions. While our projects are nuanced, we work within the crosscutting themes of gender justice, climate change, and labor rights.
