My Story

On August 12, 1992, I walked into a nursing home with my saxophone in hand. That moment changed my life. This photo was taken more than 20 years ago — one of my earliest volunteer visits.

That day, I saw something I’ve never forgotten: how one simple act of presence can light up someone’s world. A song, a smile, a conversation — it wasn’t just music that filled the room, it was connection. And for many of the people living there, it was the first time in weeks that anyone had come just for them.

More than three decades later, I’ve met countless people in long-term care who long for that same kind of connection. Nearly half of the 1.5 million people living in long-term care communities in the U.S. never receive a single visitor. No one should live out their days feeling forgotten.

That’s why I founded the National Association of Long-Term Care Volunteers (NALTCV) — to train and support companion volunteers who bring authentic, one-to-one human connection to people who need it most.

This year, for my birthday, I’m setting a goal of $1,500 to help grow this work. Every gift — no matter the size — helps move one more volunteer from “interested” to “ready to visit.”
