One of the most meaningful experiences I've had has been getting to know a senior named Red. Red has had an interesting life; he used to be a marine biologist and served in the army. When we first met, I remember how eager he was to share stories from those periods of his life. He had an old photo album full of pictures from his time in the military, trips he had taken, and moments with friends and family. We spent the entire afternoon flipping through each page, and I could tell how much it meant to him to relive those experiences and talk about what he'd done. We'd go for walks around the area and talk about anything—his favorite TV shows, how he still talks on the phone with his old friends, and what he liked best about living near the ocean. He once told me that he would sit for hours watching the water, thinking about life, science, and everything in between. Red taught me that some of the most powerful connections come from simply listening and being present.
