Choosing a career path in psychology can be broad if one isn’t sure of what they are interested in doing with it. The career paths that one can pursue are endless and deciding might be overwhelming. If you are interested in pursuing a doctoral degree as a psychologist, there are two main options to consider: the PhD and the PsyD. The question of which degree to choose is important because it will impact the training you receive in graduate school and possible career options once you earn your degree, however, many aspiring psychologists are not aware of the differences. The value of the program you choose rests solely on what your goals are.

This panel is intended inform individuals who are interested in becoming Psychologists about the PhD and PsyD educational pathways to help them make the most fitting decisions for their careers.This panel will include 5 Psychologists with varying degrees, and will provide attendees insight and information about the pros and cons of each degree, as well as explore the professional opportunities and directions that each of these professionals have had.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR:

Dr. Norma Kehdi (Senior Director of the Accessible Education Center at the University of Oregon, Private Practice Psychologist, and POC Board Member) - Specialities include learning disabilities, ADHD, diagnostic assessment, disability among college students, and acculturation and cultural competency. Norma has a passion for Arab American mental health and intergenerational trauma as well as college student well-being and belonging.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS:

Chelsea Wong, PsyD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist
Staff Psychologist, The Queen's Medical Center
Chelsea Wong is a staff psychologist at The Queen's Medical Center, Honolulu, HI. She works on a multidisciplinary consultation-liaison (C/L) psychiatric service on medical-surgical units, and an inpatient psychiatric unit. She is also a Mental Health Emergency Worker with the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health, and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, John A. Burns School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry.

Kalifa K. Oliver, Ph.D, Managing Partner DeepDive Talent Insights & Analytics
Kalifa Oliver, Ph.D. is a globally renown Industrial - Organizational Psychologist focused on creating stronger more data-savvy leaders, and helping organizations more positive and enriching end-to end employee experiences through the use of people data and analytics. A graduate from Clemson University, she is the managing partner of her own management consulting firm, DeepDive Talent Insights and Analytics, and has consulted for several Fortune 500 companies. She has held several senior and executive roles at companies such as Walmart, Wells Fargo, WPP, and Stanley Black and Decker.

Phi Loan Le, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist, Training Coordinator, CSUF
Dr. Phi Loan Le earned her B.S. in Psychobiology at the University of California, Los Angeles and her Psy.D. in clinical psychology at Nova Southeastern University. She is the training coordinator for the APA-accredited doctoral internship program at California State University, Fullerton. She is a Fellow of APA Division 35 and is passionate about multicultural feminist psychology, training, and supervision.

Susana O. Salgado, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, Founder, Mind Body Corazon Adjunct Faculty, The Center for Latinx Communities, Pepperdine University
Dr. Salgado provides therapy, immigration evaluations, consultation and trainings. She utilizes a decolonial, mujerista liberation framework, informed by Indigenous wisdom. She centers BIPOC communities and specializes in trauma, life transitions, women’s mental health & professional/career issues.

Vickie M. Mays, Ph.D., MSPH (she/her/hers), Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Health Policy & Management, UCLA
Clinical Psychologist, Director of the UCLA BRITE Center for Science, Policy & Research
As a clinical psychologist also trained in health Policy Dr. Mays research and clinical work is focused on providing evidence-based approaches for working with racial/ethnic minorities to reduce mental and physical health disparities. She is currently Co-Chairing an APA Task Force on Culturally Informed Trauma and Grief Kits with the goal of producing short restorative community based materials in coping with grief and trauma.
