We're raising funds to renovate and transform the existing playground at Project Enlightenment into an enriching, nature-based outdoor learning environment that supports the healthy development of Wake County’s youngest children!

Through collaboration with Project Enlightenment staff and other child development experts, the Wake County School System administration approved the vision for the playground transformation. A landscape architect specializing in playgrounds then transformed that vision into a beautiful new playground design.

Now, we're ready to start fundraising!

Our fundraising goal of $250,000 will support the playground transformation and provide funding for ongoing maintenance and upkeep. The target date to start construction is the summer of 2027, but to meet that goal, we need your help!

The playground is more than just a place to play. It is a critical extension of the learning environment. Research shows that nature-based, hands-on learning environments are critical for healthy early childhood development and improved educational outcomes. When children play and learn in natural settings, they:

Develop stronger cognitive skills, including problem-solving, creativity, and focus
Build resilience and self-confidence by taking age-appropriate risks in a safe environment
Strengthen gross motor and fine motor development through climbing, lifting, and manipulating natural materials
Enhance social and emotional skills as they collaborate, negotiate, and share in unstructured play
Experience reduced stress and improved mental health, supporting their readiness to learn in the classroom

By transforming the current outdated playground into a nature-based, hands-on learning space, Project Enlightenment will create an outdoor environment that extends its early childhood curriculum, aligns with best practices in child development, and prepares Wake County’s youngest learners for lifelong success.
