ABOUT MVA

Founded in 2017 in Seattle, WA, Minority Veterans of America (MVA) is a nonpartisan, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating community belonging and advancing equity for underrepresented veterans including racial and ethnic minority, LGBTQ+, women, and religious and non-religious minority veterans.

Together, our community is working to change the narrative of the American veteran and create a veteran community where we all belong and have an opportunity to thrive.

Minority Veterans of America provides resources, education, and information to community members and community providers, and we help to enact change through our advocacy program. Our movement solves the issue of providing a voice to those that have been systematically and institutionally underrepresented.

Just as civil rights are human rights, the same is true within the veteran and servicemember space. Ensuring that marginalized vets have representation and visibility is key to ensuring a diverse, inclusive military and world.

OUR PROGRAMS

Minority Vets Community Center serves as a hub for veterans, offering case management, financial assistance, outreach, and various engagement events for MVA Flagship - King County, WA. The center is a welcoming community space open to all veterans and is designed with minority and underrepresented veterans in mind. This program receives funding from King County VSHSL.

By delivering culturally-informed, intersectional programming focused on key behavioral health topics, including cultural competence, resource navigation, suicide prevention and mental wellness, we empower community members and providers, employers, educators and students to advocate for themselves and each other, contributing to our collective movement for equity, justice, and respect. This program receives funding from King County VSHSL.

The Emerging Leaders Program invests in developing the next generation of minority veteran leaders as they continue to make an impact in their local communities. The program includes an annual retreat, 12 months of leadership development opportunities, and mentorship from community partners, career coaches, and program alumni.

The Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Summit is not a conference, it’s an experience. Delving into the intersections of the minority veteran identity and the key issues that impact our world experiences the most, the Summit features lectures, panels, fireside chats, lightning talks and live performances by minority veterans and lead activists, artists, experts, and legislators.

Q'mmunity House, the first of its kind, is a safe, affirming, and supportive transitional housing program dedicated to meeting the unique needs of LGBTQ+ veterans in King County, Washington. Every veteran deserves a place to call home and to live authentically with dignity. We go beyond temporary housing, building a supportive community that fosters connection and hope. We create a safe, accessible environment where LGBTQ+ veterans can thrive and access the resources needed to rebuild, grow, and find stable, permanent housing. This program receives funding from King County VSHSL.

Our legal and policy advocacy efforts are driven by certainty that effectively supporting our nation’s minority veterans begins with recognition that the heart of the problem lies with social and structural inequalities. We advocate for social and structural change to equitably serve all veterans.

To help meet the needs of King County veterans who are no longer provided gender-affirming care by VA providers, anonymous donors have partnered with MVA to provide subsidies for transgender veterans in need of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The fund is open to residents who utilize/are eligible to utilize VA healthcare and are denied access to HRT due to federal mandates against the provision of gender-affirming care.

The Winter Wish Project was founded during the first year of COVID-19, when minority vets, service members, and their families were disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, facing job losses, housing instability, limited access to healthcare, and increased caregiving responsibilities. Knowing that challenges persist beyond the pandemic, the Winter Wish Project continues to provide critical support to families during the winter.
