If you are reading this, you know we are in the midst of destructive and violent political, social, and economic conditions. Our trusted independent news sources are closing, and Black, brown, queer, and trans reporters are losing their jobs.

Ancestors like Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Marvel Cooke, and Monica Roberts taught us how to use movement journalism as a tool for fighting oppression. Because of them, we know backing down is not an option. Press On is unwavering in our belief that movement journalism amplifies truth in the face of social injustices. We believe our interventions are key in the fight against emboldened authoritarianism. And we believe our beloved community has all we need to sustain our mission and vision into the new year.

In 2026, we will:

🔥 Ignite our Freedomways Reporting Fellowship for six fellows who are accountable to the South to each complete an investigative, longform, or enterprise reporting project on some of the most pressing issues facing the South, including environmental justice, reproductive justice, trans liberation, and migrant justice.

🚀 Kickstart a community decision-making process to redistribute grant funds to support collaborative movement journalism reporting and freelancers through our Southern Movement Media Fund, ensuring that Southern movement journalists are paid for their work.

💫 Catalyze the skills of movement journalists, storytellers & organizers through our Level Up popular education program.

🕸️ Fuel our network of movement media makers to stay connected to each other, creating opportunities to build community & deepen solidarity and access resources needed to produce movement journalism.

The Press On staff collective

We are journalists, storytellers, and organizers rooted in, and practicing solidarity with, oppressed communities that birth social movements. We are based in the South, and we strive to uphold Southern traditions of storytelling that have long resisted the systems of extraction, exploitation, and colonization that have defined mainstream journalism.

By providing a diverse set of resources including trainings, fellowships and opportunities for network-building, Press On aims to help journalists and storytellers produce reporting that’s driven by communities that are building power to create transformative social change.

What is Movement Journalism?

Movement journalism is journalism in service to liberation. It is accountable to social movements, centers the experiences of systematically oppressed people, and exposes the root causes of harm and injustice. Movement journalism is transparent and evidence-based, seeking and sharing stories with curiosity and mutual respect for the purpose of transformative social change.

Our Values

WE BELIEVE that the South is the critical site for leadership in the growing practice of movement journalism, and that Black Southern freedom struggles serve as a model for liberation.

WE BELIEVE that journalism driven by people who are building power within marginalized and oppressed communities is necessary to creating transformative social change.

WE ARE COMMITTED TO producing journalism that is transparent, accurate, and evidence-based.

WE ARE COMMITTED TO using journalism as a tool to support social justice organizing, and to use organizing as a tool to transform the field of journalism.

THROUGH THIS WORK WE HONOR the legacy and lived experiences of the communities we are a part of and in solidarity with: Black and indigenous people, immigrants, oppressed people in rural communities, queer and trans people, and all systematically oppressed Southerners, from the Delta to Appalachia, who tell stories to ensure our humanity, dignity and power.
