Overview

Our award-winning hit play, Truth Values, is a true-life tale that offers a humorous and compassionate look at the joys and challenges of being a professional woman in the male-dominated STEM fields. The play has been widely embraced as a conversation catalyst on diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM, having been presented at over 60 performing arts centers throughout the U.S. and Canada paired with post-show discussions with more than 250 prominent experts.

Now we have the opportunity to create a related documentary that includes a live capture of the play and the best of our post-show conversations. Siobhan Roberts, noted math and science writer for The New York Times, is excited to write the screenplay, her colleague, artist and filmmaker Amelia Saul, to direct the documentary, and Tony-winning theatrical director Michael Arden to direct the live-capture of the show.

As Truth Values toured, interest developed in presenting it paired with discussions about equality in STEM. The project won a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to add mentoring conversations for students to our live performance events, featuring outstanding women in STEM (pictured above). In 2019, we put the word out widely to universities about our new live event offering. 75% of those contacted were eager to bring the program to their campuses, but only a fraction, 7%, were able to provide funding to cover the cost. And then in 2020 those bookings could not happen.

In 2022, via seed funding from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, we began laying the groundwork for a related documentary. This would allow our program to have greater reach, especially to underserved communities which have the greatest need and fewest resources. We were thrilled for this support, and began working to make the documentary a reality. Siobhan Roberts, noted math and science writer for The New York Times is excited to write the screenplay, her colleague, artist and filmmaker Amelia Saul, to direct the documentary, and Tony-winning theatrical director Michael Arden to direct the live-capture of the show.

Our plan, timeline, budget and creative team in place, we are seeking funding that would allow us to begin shooting the documentary trailer while we continue to tour the program live. Through our non-profit, Truth and Art, Inc., all donations are *tax-deductible.
