Mission Statement: To improve maternal-infant mental health outcomes and family resiliency bridging the critical gap in care by combining clinical treatment, doula support, education, and community care to pregnant and postpartum families.

Mother Up is a nonprofit organization with a mission to improve maternal-infant mental health outcomes and family resiliency bridging the critical gap in care by combining clinical treatment, doula support, education, and community care to pregnant and postpartum families. Our vision is a community where every perinatal woman feels supported, understood, and empowered to navigate motherhood with resiliency and hope, fostering better outcomes for families.  We will accomplish this by providing full-spectrum support for birthing people — from pregnancy through birth, postpartum, and beyond. We combine skilled doula care, crisis-responsive postpartum services, and community-centered programs that build family resiliency and improve maternal mental health outcomes.

Mother Up!  Supports families through transition and gives them tools to succeed.

We’re raising funds to cover start up and first year operation costs. These costs include legal representation, building procurement, supplies, furniture, payroll, utilities, and more. This step will allow us to open our first Mother Up! center in Roanoke, Virginia — a holistic care and healing space that provides:

• Prenatal, birth, and postpartum doula care.

• Mother-baby postpartum in-patient and out-patient crisis care 

• Skills training for newborn care, coping, and self-care. 

• Evidence-based education about birth, interventions, breastfeeding, postpartum mood & anxiety disorders, parenting, and relationships. 

• Peer support groups

• 1 on 1 and group therapy services

• A perinatal community space and programs for lasting family resiliency

• Care coordination 

• Spiritual Support

We believe every mother — regardless of income, status, or support system — deserves access to compassionate, skilled care & community before and after birth. 

Currently a mother who experiences extreme postpartum mood & anxiety disorders either 

1. Don't seek care due to stigma and fear, and suffer through exacerbating the level of distress and duration of suffering, affecting the child, the family, and the community. 

2. Volunteer themselves to institutionalization leaving the baby behind which strains the mother-baby bond, and moms report feeling like their hospitalization was more of a jail sentence and they felt out of place.

3. Acts on her suicidal or homicidal thoughts. No further explanation needed. 

Mothers are at risk for hospitalization when they are not properly supported during the prenatal period, through labor & delivery, and during the postpartum period. Other risk factors of developing a postpartum mood & anxiety disorder include; a personal or family history of mental health concerns,lack of support from family and friends, being a single mom, being a person of color, being LGBTQIA+, recent loss of a parent or other family member, previous fetal & infant loss, previous trauma, active trauma, and more.

We aim to prevent their hospitalization in the first place, provide a safe baby-welcome crisis-informed facility should they need it, and continue to provide needed support such as community space and creative opportunities to provide continuous support.
