Robert has been incarcerated for 10 years. His daughter is 16, and when he first heard about the Father-Daughter Dance, he says he was “excited and hopeful” to see her dressed up and to share that moment together.
Over the years, he has missed countless milestones — school events, work days, even something as simple as taking her to a movie or chaperoning a dance. “We could probably go on forever,” Robert admits. That’s why this dance feels so meaningful: “It means getting a chance to relate, to catch up, to find common ground with each other — maybe even some breakthroughs.”
Robert says wearing a suit in front of his daughter is about showing pride in how he carries himself. More than anything, his message for her is simple: “God loves you.” His faith, he adds, has been tested and strengthened during his incarceration. “The mind of Christ shines through and gives me something to hold on to. The only thing that satisfies is the light of life.”
