Sacred Birthing Village is a woman-led, BIPOC-led powerhouse. Amidst the maternal health crisis that continues to plague the United States and many parts of the world, we are helping birthing women save their own lives and those of their families through peer-to-peer mentoring.

OUR MISSION

We witness, honor & elevate BIPOC women & families through the sacred initiation of birth and revitalize the concept of “it takes a village” for transformation, liberation & joy to reclaim our innate birthright to thrive as families and communities.

WHAT WE DO

We engage, practice, participate, and build connections, care, and relationships aligned with our cultural knowledge, beliefs, and practices as people of the Black diaspora. We intentionally understand who we are and where we come from to create a path for where we are to go. As a collective, we bind to the wisdom of our ancestors and choose to see and work with what we each bring to the table for our care and relationships. Each person is their expert, and we align with their experiences and wisdom to honor and engage in a dignified reciprocal engagement of care, trust building, and nurturing of life.

Sisterhood heals the soul: Our birthing mothers are joined with a SisterFriend, who supports the mother and child formally until the child's first birthday. However, this bond is a community bond, for our birthing sister is held up in her time of need and then will hold others in their time of need. By supporting the mother and child, we are supporting the entire family, which then is able to support itself, grow stronger and support others. We are growing roots, which spread into root systems to nurture and grow the entire community.

OUR CommUNITY

We are located in the gateway city of New Bedford, in the South Coast Massachusetts region. Our CommUNITY comprises a total of three gateway cities, as well as adjacent towns. We have created a village of dedicated volunteers to hold and uplift our birthing women and their families, who in turn hold and uplift others in the community.
