In this Season of Giving, we are asking for your support for Coro Allegro, Boston's LGBTQ+ and allied classical chorus.

Our goal for this year is to raise 100 gifts from the community. Each gift will be doubled dollar for dollar up to $5K, due to a second matching challenge from generous donors who offered it to help grow our #CoroFamily.

Here is a story about music and why a gift to Coro Allegro will so resonate with our community this in this Season of Giving:

Last month, Coro gave an amazing concert called Letters to Our Children: Voices across Generations for LGBTQ+ Youth, that featured the world premiere of the kind of timely and powerful work that Coro has introduced to audiences since our founding, and that won us Chorus America's prestigious Adventurous Programming Award in 2019. HERE I AM: I AM HERE by the brilliant composer Andrea Clearfield, was commissioned in part by singers from the chorus, and is based on open letters to a transgender child and to a survivor of conversion therapy by leading LGBTQ+ advocates, Mimi Lemay and Sam Brinton.

Inspired by their moving letters of love, we invited the audience to submit their own open messages of support for LGBTQ+ youth and their families to the Letters Project, a letter writing campaign launched with the help of community partners. At the concert, we featured an exhibit of some of the moving letters and art that had already begun to come in, alongside tables showcasing the work that our partners—the Boston Alliance for LGBTQ Youth (BAGLY), GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the Mass Transgender Political Caucus (MTPC) and the Transgender Emergency Fund (TEF)—do everyday for LGBTQ+ youth.

Here is how a musician in the audience described the concert itself:

"I was completely overwhelmed by what I experienced this afternoon. What a program! The choral singing was astounding...The beautiful sound, flawless intonation, dynamic range, fantastic diction and rhythmic vitality of the chorus was evident in every beat of the difficult program. The soloists you chose could not have been more ideal. The string quartet was astonishing. The pianist provided a solid and musical core that fortified and supported all of the other musicians. The narrators spoke with confidence, warmth and conviction. And all of this happened under...impeccable musical direction...resulting in a rare musical and emotional experience that swept across the room and grabbed the attention and the hearts of everyone who was fortunate enough to be present.

I hesitate to use the word perfection when talking about music, but what I heard today was as close as it's going to get before we're granted wings."

This is the power of extraordinary music.

This year as LGBTQ+ rights are being threatened by those who would silence us, your support of our mission as Boston's LGBTQ+ and allied classical chorus, has never mattered more. Your gifts will strengthen and affirm Coro Allegro's commitment to be a visible, vocal model of a proud LGBTQ+ organization, and to keep building bridges between communities through music that calls forth and affirms our common humanity.

The thunderous standing ovation we received at the end of the concert went on until the last performer left the room. We are stronger when we stand together and give together.
