What is Qigong? (Pronounced Chi-kung)
“Qigong is a Chinese system of holistic health practice, with roots dating back 5 thousand years. Energy cultivation is an excellent translation for Qigong, because it conveys the idea that, just as an agricultural field is cultivated with careful tending over time to produce food, your own field of life energy is cultivated so that your body and mind are nourished. Qigong brings body, breathing and mind together to perform movements and hold postures that exercise the whole person. While usually performed standing, it can also be preformed seated. Although most Qigong is characterized by slow flowing movements, it can also be still.”

Many people associate qigong (chi-goong), with martial arts, but this is misleading. Qigong is an ancient health exercise going back to neolithic Chinese cultures from thousands of years ago. Qigong practice combines complete body movement coupled with breath awareness. This practice increases strength, mobility, balance and mindfulness. Also, many people express how much more relaxed they feel after a practice.

Time: 9:30-10:30

Dress: Dress for the weather. Layer up if it is cool. Wear sturdy comfortable shoes. Bring a walking stick or fold-up stool/chair for seated qigong.

As a yoga teacher experienced in many styles of yoga, Qigong seemed like an obvious new direction for me. I hope you will join us.
