American Indians experience higher rates of developing some of the most common and preventable cancers and lower survival rates for almost all cancers. In fact, cancer is the leading cause of death for American Indians in the United States. The American Indian Cancer Foundation (AICAF) is actively addressing these issues by focusing on prevention and early detection to decrease new diagnoses and increase survivorship among Native people in a culturally relevant and responsive way.
