Richmond Pageturners

Building Strong Readers & Artists: Help Richmond Pageturners Thrive!

Richmond Pageturners program empowers African American 2nd graders in Richmond, California. Under the direction of retired elementary school teachers and early childhood education interns, Art at Vibe will foster a love of reading and build strong readers in our community.

Through engaging activities and interactive games, the program tackles foundational skills like phonics, sight words, decoding, and fluency. Our team goes beyond mechanics by encouraging critical thinking through discussions about characters, plot, and personal connections to the stories. Our culturally relevant children's literature allows students to see themselves reflected in the books they read, further boosting engagement.

For a safe and supportive environment, we integrate social-emotional learning (SEL) to build self-esteem, positive communication, and a growth mindset. Individualized instruction and support are provided through one-on-one sessions with dedicated tutors. Flexible scheduling options at after-school programs, community centers, or even virtually cater to busy families. Family involvement is encouraged with workshops, take-home activities, and recommended reading lists. Diverse tutors serve as positive role models, and partnerships with libraries and bookstores provide additional resources and enrichment activities.

Building Strong Readers in Richmond fosters a nurturing environment where African American children develop a lifelong love of learning and become proficient readers.

What does any of this have to do with art?

Even in 2nd grade, strong literacy skills can be the key to unlocking a world of wonder in art! By reading, the student gains context for the artwork. This newfound knowledge can spark curiosity. As their reading improves, they can explore simple explanations of different artistic techniques, like brushstrokes or how sculptures are formed. This newfound vocabulary allows them to discuss art with confidence, forming their own opinions about what they see. The connection between literacy and art goes beyond just understanding existing works. Literacy opens doors to a richer art experience. Finally, a well-loved story can spark a child's imagination and inspire them to create their own art. In essence, strong literacy skills in 2nd grade become a bridge to a world of artistic exploration. They allow children to connect with art on a deeper level, appreciate artistic styles, and even use their growing reading skills to fuel their own creative expression.
