Story
THE NEED
Too many communities in the City of Richmond are facing a combination of food insecurity and environmental burdens that can be traced directly to a history of discrimination and injustice. Unfortunately, young people are most vulnerable to these challenges. Renew Richmond established Farmstrong in 2015 as a space to directly address these issues, while empowering young people to lead in these areas in the coming years.
YOUR DONATION MATTERS
Our goal is to raise $25,000 to match a recent $25,000 grant award from Virginia Outdoors Foundation (read about it HERE). Your support, of any amount, will allow us to acquire ownership of the farm and expand our youth and community programs after stewarding the land since 2015. This significant step will provide us with long term stability, security and flexibility to connect with the young people throughout the community.
ABOUT FARMSTRONG
In 2015, Renew Richmond revived a vacant 1.5-acre plot of land bordering the City of Richmond's East End and Henrico County and turned it into a community farm, affectionately called Farmstrong. We established the farm to engage youth and community members in hands-on, skills-based projects in agriculture and environmental sustainability to promote food access, environmental justice, educational advancement and career readiness. Over the years, Renew Richmond has worked with local public schools and youth serving groups such as the City of Richmond's Mayor's Youth Academy and The City of Richmond Department of Justice Services Division of Juvenile Community Programs. Today, we are in the final stages of an effort to renovate, expand, and unlock the farm's potential as a vibrant community green space and resource for young people and families in our community.
