Franki Jones' Story

Hi My name is Franki. I am 17 years old and I live in Indiana right now. I'm not from here and I never really wanted to move here, so far away from friends and family, but change is good so I accepted it. My first few months living here was great. Very peaceful, pretty good school, and good people. It's always so beautiful outside, even when it rains, and I began to fall in love with Indiana. As months went on, I noticed a slight change in the way my mother ate, the way she slept, and how quickly her mood changed. I noticed that she'd be so much more aggressive towards things and my mother isn't just an aggressive woman, something is wrong. One day a police officer knocks on the door, my mom is at work. He says to me that he hates to be the bearer of bad news, but we're getting evicted. All of our jaws dropped. There's 17 me, 20 year old brother, 22 year old sister, 9 years old brother, and my sisters to babies, one being 1 years old the other being about 6 months. We packed all of our stuff up, as we waited for my mom to get back home. I cried and cried and cried and prayed that this can all get figured out. We had the babies in their car seats, sitting in the police car with the AC, My mom came home.. she was calm, but we all felt that aura.. she was panicking. We had about an hour to come up with 500 dollars. Everyone started making phone calls.. and surprisingly, we came up with the 500 dollars. Unfortunately, the landlord didn't want to accept the money.. and we all had to leave. My mother was crying so much and she was so lost.. It hurt my heart so bad.. We stayed at my grandmothers for a couple of days. Eventually, we were able to go back to the apartment and all was well. Until suddenly the sheriffs knock at my door then walk away, I open the door and I find a packet of papers.. Court date...water bill...400 dollars...not again Mama. I sent her a picture of it and she tells me that she will handle it and indeed she did handle it. On her court date as she's making phone calls to pay these things off, the power goes out. She pays it, it comes back on. Now she's short about 200-400 dollars. We go to the store to get an order for the rent.. They can't do it without cash. We come back home, feeling defeated. I'm panicking, texting my dad, "We might get evicted again".. There's nothing that he can do about it. My mother just gave these people 1800 dollars... suddenly she owes them 2600 more. She's depressed and she's not eating. She's stressed and she's not sleeping. Our single African American Mothers need our help. I'm only a child there's only so much that I can do. Help me help you. Please. Anything helps. I'm desperate at this point. I've applied to over 30 jobs in just that 1 month of June 2024.. I'm losing hope..I'm paranoid I'm panicking. Please.
