Another Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Success Story!

Jasper was living in a very small studio in Downtown Santa Cruz with two other dogs and a nice lady who was experiencing tough times and health issues. When she was taken to the hospital, our Animal Control Officers found the three dogs living in unsafe conditions and walking in their own waste. Given extensive records over the last 7 years of passive neglect by the guardian (and that no one was around to provide proper care for the dogs), our officers brought them back to the Shelter for safekeeping.

When the owner returned home, it was decided that she would be able to care optimally for only one dog. During the time she was in the hospital, our Shelter staff fostered and worked with Jasper on potty training, living with cats, and normal adjustments such as riding in a car and walking up/down stairs. As he regained health and confidence, Jasper was adopted by a loving family and is now fur-ever in his own warm home!

As the largest and most comprehensive animal care and rescue organization in the county, the open-admission Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter takes in about 6,600 animals each year. Government funding is limited, so we depend on our community to sustain our life-saving and pet homelessness prevention programs. With two locations in Santa Cruz and Watsonville, the Shelter partners with our nonprofit, the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation, to ensure these crucial services continue and grow.

The Foundation’s mission is to support the Shelter through fundraising, education and advocacy. It helps to cover the costs for core services such as animal control; licensing and rabies vaccinations; safe housing for strays and surrenders; intervention in animal abuse cases; and even leads in animal emergencies such as the CZU Fires. The Foundation is also proactive in tackling root causes of animal overpopulation and suffering by offering prevention programs, exceptional medical care, humane education and community outreach.
