Hi everyone!
We recently had James' three-year follow-up appointment post his bone marrow transplant at Dana Farber this month. While we have a lot to be grateful for because James is doing well, and continues to be cancer-free, it was also a painful reminder of all the late and long-term effects of his treatment we need to watch out for. It's a bit of a tough reality to swallow because he is such a great kid who has already been through so much, so it’s a hard thing to have to acknowledge and be reminded of. One day at a time though, right?
Post-treatment effects from childhood cancer can include a range of physical and psychological issues, such as growth problems, hormonal imbalances, heart issues, cognitive difficulties, hearing loss, vision changes, bone problems, fertility concerns, second cancers, and mental health challenges like depression and anxiety. There is also an increased risk of developing cancer again at any point in life.
I post all of this, not to make people feel sorry for James or us (he's awesome and our family really is doing great), but to help explain why raising money for families like mine or those who have had to experience childhood lost through @Rett's Roost is so important to me.
This coming Sunday, March 2 at 11:00am, I will once again be plunging into the icy waters of Wells Maine to raise money for @Rett’s Roost to support other families facing the tragedy of childhood cancer and child loss. It’s been a very cold winter, so I hope you can appreciate this sacrifice! I’m hoping to raise at least $222, and it would mean a great deal to me if you could help me reach this goal or more. I know I ask a lot each year, but it also means a lot to me to be able to make a difference for this cause. Thanks so much for your support. Wish me luck, I will need it!
