The Rey Feo Scholarship Foundation traces its roots back to 1947.

It was established as a 501c3 non-profit, non-political organization with a singular focus on promoting education. Inspired by the legend of El Rey Feo, a symbolic figure of rebellion against societal exclusion, the foundation was born out of a desire to bridge the gap in educational opportunities for San Antonio's youth.

The legend of El Rey Feo dates back to medieval Spain, where ordinary citizens rebelled against a distant and elitist monarchy by proclaiming one of their own as "The Ugly King" or The People's King. This act of rebellion evolved and found its way to the New World, taking root in Aguas Calientes, Mexico, during La Feria de San Marcos. In 1947, members of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council No. 2 in San Antonio drew inspiration from this tradition. They launched their own Rey Feo competition to raise funds for scholarships.

Over the years, the Rey Feo Scholarship Foundation has evolved, expanding its reach and impact within the community. In 1980, Rey Feo was formally invited to participate in Fiesta, San Antonio's iconic annual celebration, and was given his own parade called Paseo Del Rey Feo. Today, Rey Feo holds official royalty status alongside other Fiesta dignitaries and participates in all aspects of the 10-day celebration.

The foundation's impact is far-reaching, with over $10 million raised for scholarships awarded to over 7,000 students since its inception. Despite challenges, such as the onset of the pandemic, the foundation has remained resilient, continuing to support deserving students on their educational journeys.

Rey Feo's reign goes beyond ceremonial duties; he serves as a goodwill ambassador, visiting over 60 elementary schools to inspire young people to pursue education and strive for excellence. Through scholarships and outreach efforts, Rey Feo and the Rey Feo Scholarship Foundation are building a brighter future for San Antonio, one student at a time.

Today, the foundation's scholarship program is recognized as an "Economic Development Enhancement Program" for Bexar County and the City of San Antonio, highlighting the positive community impact of hundreds of students receiving a college degree or vocational training.

Your support is crucial in sustaining and expanding the foundation's mission. Together, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of San Antonio's youth and pave the way for a brighter tomorrow. Join us in our commitment to building brighter futures through education with the Rey Feo Scholarship Foundation.
