Rikers Island Cat Rescue (RICR) is dedicated to caring for and managing the community cats living on Rikers Island. The presence of cats on the island dates back decades, and the first large-scale Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) effort began around 2002, resulting in the spay/neuter of hundreds of cats in cooperation with organizations such as the ASPCA and the Humane Society of New York.
Over the years, maintaining a stable cat population on the island has been challenging due to its size, security restrictions, and the limitations of periodic access for trapping and care. Despite these challenges, RICR, led by retired Rikers Captain Gloria Murli, has continued to provide daily feeding at 27 stations and veterinary care for the cats, supported by volunteers and donations.
RICR relies on donations to fund food, veterinary care, and the development of the sanctuary. Through this dedicated, patient, and relationship-focused work, RICR strives to ensure the welfare of the cats on Rikers Island while providing a model of community cat care in a sensitive, challenging environment.
