Rising Tides Program
The Rising Tides Program connects students with the incredible opportunities that await them at Western
Washington University's Shannon Point Marine Center (SPMC) in Anacortes, WA. CISWS toured the facility and met
with Derek Smith; Shannon Point Lab Manager, and Mira Lutz; Shannon Point Marine Tech, to discuss the
ways K-12 students can get involved there. CISWS is spearheading this program because the COVID pandemic
ended SPMS's Education Outreach position.
These services will be provided to students free of charge. Funds raised will be used for transportation, food and supervision costs involved in getting students to SPMC.
Projects include:
- Build and operate under water ROV (remote operated vehicles). Which can potentially be entered in a state wide contest.
- Scuba and snorkel lessons.
- Experience being on a research vessel.
- Raising abalone (sea snails) populations to be released into the wild. (multi-year project)
- Sea water analysis - nitrogen levels, ph balances, ocean acidification.
- Experience in a science lab setting.
- Collaboration with professors and undergrad students.
- Whale watching.
- See weed farming.
- AND MORE.
