Rosa "Prickly Pear's" Story

Scott Rothenberger was in the midst of an adventurous ride on the Apache Trail with some friends on the morning of April 18, 2015, when suddenly this journey became even more adventurous at the Roosevelt Lake overlook.

There, they discovered a beautiful abandoned, stray dog with no tags on her collar.  For the next hour, they fed her, gained her trust to get her in their car, and spoke with the local sheriff's department to find out if anyone had reported a missing dog.

They named this lovable pooch Rosa "Prickly Pear" because they had already fallen for this beautiful stray desert dog found at Roosevelt Lake. They arrived at Lost Our Home Pet Rescue to have her scanned for a microchip, but when none was discovered, Scott continued for three days to try to find her previous home, calling shelters/rescues and other services.

As the days passed, Scott's love for her grew and he knew that she would become part of his family. Since Scott was just here for a few days from Pennsylvania, Rosa stayed at Lost Our Home Pet Rescue until arrangements were made to have her flown to join her new loving family in PA.

Once in her new home, Rosa was surrounded by so much love - she not only had two human parents but also had four new fur siblings. The vet told Scott that she was about one year old when she was found, so every year on April 18th, they celebrated her birthday +1.

For just over seven years, this amazing dog lived her best life with her "Furever" Family" in a home filled with lots of fun, treats, and tons of love. Scott said that Rosa was their bridge dog who loved her four fur siblings who were there when she was adopted, that she saw the family through the loss of each of those four, and then when two new fur siblings arrived she acted as a momma to them to guide them..... "she was the glue that held this family together".

Sadly, Scott's Desert Angel passed at 12:45 am on August 24, 2022.

Scott has started this fund not only because he and his family love Rosa and want to honor her but also because this Desert Angel touched the lives of so many people and pets.  Not only did every person who met her fall in love with her, but the story of her amazing journey has brought so many wonderful people together, has inspired others to contribute to pets and people in crisis, and has helped forge connections and friendships between many of us who knew her and of her.

Please make a donation to Lost Our Home Pet Rescue in honor of this incredible dog, Rosa "Prickly Pear", who has made a difference in the lives of pets and people.
