What the heck is THE SPEED PROJECT?

According to Runner's World Magazine, 'The Speed Project has a reputation for being one of the hardest – and most secretive – relay races in the world. Starting at the Santa Monica Pier and ending at the Las Vegas welcome sign, this 340-mile relay is made up of teams consisting of six runners (each runner completes about 50 miles over the course of two days). There is no official race website or official set of rules or regulations.'

It not only sounds insane, it pretty much is. The Speed Project tests the endurance of the world's top athletes, exclusive to only those who make the cut. Yet, that's precisely what we—a team of financial professionals—are about to tackle head-on and what ultimately inspired this fundraiser. Because we thought if we were going to do something so crazy, why stop there? We had to take it one step further and use the race to make an impact. This is where this campaign enters... and why we've centered it around raising money for prison education. The Speed Project tests a person's mental and physical resilience, a journey that symbolizes grit and drive - the same traits needed for people rebuilding their lives.

What is the MIT SLOAN PRISON EDUCATION INITIATIVE?

MIT Sloan Prison Education Initiative (Sloan PEI) - Created and launched by our team captain Daniel Dart the MIT Sloan Prison Education Initiative provides business and finance (Intro to Entrepreneurship, Consumer Mathematics, and Financial Literacy) classes to incarcerated men and women in jails and prisons in Massachusetts. They are led and taught by current MBA students at MIT. The program is partnered with and housed at MIT's Educational Justice Institute (TEJI). And why partner with Sloan PEI? Well, because it hits close to home for Daniel as the first formerly incarcerated student to attend the MIT Sloan School of Management. Daniel co-founded Sloan’s Prison Education Initiative to help others follow the path he has paved: one that leads to freedom and hope. The path that this team will run represents a parallel of the path created by the Initiative, demonstrating that through individual grit and communal support, the wildest of dreams are possible.

Where will the money go, and how will it be used?

Great question! A small portion of the money raised will go to support making this happen, to help our crew and ops. Anything above and beyond that - minus platform and admin fees - will go to the MIT programs, being split down the middle.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes! Every red cent you contribute is tax deductible. This project is fiscally sponsored by Indispensable, a 501c3 organization registered with the IRS. Donations to this project are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Woo-hoo!
