The narrow and limiting definitions of masculinity that exist in our culture are harmful. And that harm is not limited to not just boys and men; it impacts each and every one of us.

America is awakening to the fact that in many ways, boys and men are struggling. And, much of that struggle is due to societal pressures to perform masculinity in ways that can be harmful to physical and mental health.

The statistics illustrating what some are calling "the crisis of masculinity" are staggering. To name just a few:

Men are four times more likely to die by suicide than women.
Boys are three times more likely than girls to be expelled from school.
71% of opioid overdose deaths occur among men.
Men account for 70% of the unsheltered population.

Maine Boys to Men is addressing this crisis head on.

For over 25 years, Maine Boys to Men has been providing safe spaces for boys and men to challenge our culture’s harmful stereotypes about what it means to “be a man.”

With a focus on harm reduction, our programs support the positive and non-violent development of boys and men by challenging destructive aspects of masculinity that are a root cause of self-harm, injustice, and violence.
