The San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM) was founded in 2017 by National Humanities Award winner Everett Fly and community advocate George Frederick. A Mellon Foundation grant provided the start-up funding through the University of North Carolina. SAAACAM’s original vision was to be a history-gathering, community-driven archive focused on Bexar County.

SAAACAM has expanded its services and reach. Our community-based digital archive is still our heartbeat. The archive helps to inform our exhibitions and programming. Additional key services include:

Exhibitions and Tours: SAAACAM organizes rotating exhibits at various locations, including the San Antonio International Airport. Permanent exhibitions at the La Villita Historic Arts Village near downtown San Antonio. The museum also offers Black History Riverwalk Tours, giving visitors a unique 90-minute experience of African American history in San Antonio via a river barge. Other tours include: cemetery tours and The Green Book, Safe Spots for Negro Motorists Tour.
Educational Resources: The museum provides resources such as the Middle and High School Black History Curriculum and an Educator’s Resource Guide to support learning about African American history. They also engage students through various educational programs and community initiatives such as the Black History Film Series.
Special Events and Cultural Programming: SAAACAM hosts various cultural events throughout the year, including county-wide Juneteenth programs. They are also actively involved in initiatives like the Alamo Museum Planning Committee, preservation of the Kress and Grant Department Stores and other historical preservation efforts.

These services help foster greater awareness and appreciation of African American contributions to San Antonio's rich history.
