ST BOTOLPH CHARITABLE FOUNDATION - Heritage Fund

The goal of the heritage fund is to preserve and protect the historic exterior and other decorative and architectural elements (including the extensive art collection) of the property at 199 Commonwealth Avenue and other properties in the historic back bay in Boston to the extent that funds are available.

The McKim Meade and White designed building at 199 Commonwealth Avenue is a jewel in Boston’s Back Bay golden era of residential development. Built as a private residence, the interiors were never altered or broken up into apartments over time like most of the other fine homes along the Commonwealth Avenue Mall.

By preserving and protecting the building and its artwork, we serve our artists and our neighborhood community by keeping the building in good repair, keeping a consistent public face to the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, and ensuring that it will be available to future generations to celebrate their art and receive awards and grants in the spaces filled with artifacts of past members John Singer Sargent, Robert Frost, and Frederick Law Olmstead amongst many others. We thereby perpetuate the education of posterity with regard to the architectural and general cultural heritage of the St. Botolph Club.
