Since 1980, SEDS has offered students nationwide unparalleled opportunities in space advocacy, engineering, and career development. From awarding engineering scholarships to organizing the annual SpaceVision conference, SEDS equips students with the tools they need to excel in the space industry. In 2023, SEDS:
- Hosted 450+ students, 76 speakers, and 71 companies at the 40th annual SpaceVision in Washington, DC, the premier space conference for students.
- Sponsored $40,000 in projects across 27 universities, including:
- Portland State Aerospace Society’s (PSAS) minTS, a small-scale rocket engine test driving the organization’s first successful launch of a liquid-fueled rocket. SEDS provided $4,500 of grant money, which allowed the organization to purchase high power rocket kits, certifications, and a cryogenic dewar. Check out more about their recent project, OreSar Live, an open source community outreach program to connect middle and high school students to satellites (link to portland space for all page).
- Illinois Space Society’s (ISS) Stargazer, a student researched and developed (SRAD) two-stage separation rocket competing in a national rocketry competition. With $1,100 of SEDS funding for a rocket motor and miscellaneous parts, the organization re-designed and launched their rocket.
- Provided $16,000 in scholarships for 40 students to attend SATELLITE, through partnerships with companies across various industries.
- Organized 4 competitions in business, research, mission development (in partnership with SSPI), and art with $4,000 of cash prizes.
- Provided $10,00 in scholarships to 30 students for conferences outside of our own including SATELLITE, ASCEND, and the International Space Development Conference
