Help us seed our exciting plans ahead! 🌱 For the past decade, cinéSPEAK has been using film to help build community and strengthen movements for collective liberation. There’s so little financial support for this kind of work, especially at the local level in Philly—so we're asking our community to pool our resources so that cinéSPEAK can unroll this exciting new season of Under the Stars and continue to spotlight filmmakers and organizations in our journal.

🌱 For those who missed it, we announced that we are launching a brick-and-mortar cinema in the Calvary Center on 48th and Baltimore in West Philly! We are SO excited about this–we have been searching for a physical home for cinéSPEAK for many years, and this space offers all that we’ve been looking for: located in the heart of West Philly, the Calvary Center is a beautiful historic chapel with space for large film screenings and more intimate gatherings in phlAIR House, the adjacent former parsonage. We are busy at work collaborating with Interface Studio Architects (who did Cherry Street Pier) to update the space and will be partnering with local artists and film and other cultural organizations to do programming there.

🌱 Over 60% of cinéSPEAK’s budget goes directly into the hands of artists—the filmmakers, moderators, and musicians that make the events so special and the writers who contribute to our journal. And the rest supports the logistics to make it all happen. Let’s build the world we want where artists are valued, and cultural events are accessible to all.
