Shipwreck Corner Renewal Project - ALL HANDS ON DECK!
It’s time for some landscape renewal at the Shipwreck Corner and we need your help. The Boston Harbor Garden Club was formed in the fall of 2002. We called ourselves the “Sewer Sisters,” which is how our project unfolded. Our initial mission was to beautify the entrance to our neighborhood, now affectionately known as “Shipwreck Corner.” This neglected “treatment plant corner” was overrun with blackberry, bindweed, and beer cans that didn’t do justice to our picturesque neighborhood. As the first thing people see when they come to Boston Harbor, we wanted the entrance to be colorful and inviting, expressing a feeling of welcome.
The Sewer Sisters have many other accomplishments in furtherance of our mission. With funds generated from personal donations and our biannual garden tour, we have accomplished many things since our founding:
Ø Established informal beds with native and non-native shrubs and plants, selected for their hardiness and propensity for providing multi-seasonal interest and color;
Ø Purchased topsoil, wood chips, and plants after constructing a pathway through the area;
Ø Installed a sprinkling system;
Ø Installed a drinking fountain;
Ø Installed a viewing bench;
Ø Created a path that curves through the property
Ø Purchased and installed colorful LED lights that brighten the entrance to the neighborhood from November through January;
Ø Sponsored and organized early work parties at the Butterfly Garden at Burfoot Park;
Ø Retained the services of a tree preservation company to remove overhanging and unsightly branches.
All residents of Boston Harbor are invited and encouraged to join with other volunteers in working to beautify the entrance to the neighborhood. Residents unable to handle the necessary physical labor of a work part, support the organization with dues, donations of plants and services, as well as cash.
At this time, Shipwreck Corner needs a major renewal, with the removal of invasive species, dead trees, and overhanging branches. New hardy native and non-native shrubs will bring color and interest to the corner throughout the year.
“All Hands on Deck” is your invitation to help meet the goal of raising $10,000 to accomplish and maintain the corner.
