Hidden in the heart of Scotch Plains, New Jersey, stands a place where history, culture, and sport comes together at the historic Shady Rest Country Club. More than just a golf course, it is a landmark of Black excellence and perseverance. Established as the first African American owned country club in the United States, Shady Rest offered a space where the Black community could gather, celebrate, and thrive during a time of deep segregation in America. Its fairways and clubhouse became a symbol of what unity and determination.

Shady Rest was home to some of the most influential figures in American history. John Shippen, the nation’s first American golf professional, called it home for 33 years and helped shape its legacy through his pioneering achievements in golf. Althea Gibson, the first African American to win a Grand Slam tennis title; civil rights visionary W.E.B. DuBois and many musicians such as Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, all found community and belonging at Shady Rest throughout their path to cultural and historical impact. Their presence turned Shady Rest into a beacon lasting symbol of achievement, artistry, and cultural pride that continues to inspire generations. 

Preserve Shady Rest, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization composed of New Jersey residents who are the vanguard in preserving, protecting, and honoring the vibrant legacy of Shady Rest Country Club. Our mission is to ensure that Shady Rest remains a prominent living monument of African American and sports history.
