Some of my friends ask me how I can spend free time—especially summer—with teenagers after being at school all day long for nine months. If you learn more about Siblings Forever (previously Camp to Belong - GA), you might see how easy it is.
I’ve been at a couple of week-long summer camps, three family weekends, and a few day events, all designed to reunite siblings that are separated by foster care. I am always amazed at the blend of toughness and tenderness all of the campers display.
One summer, a group of three brothers, all living with different foster parents, had a great time sharing a cabin, debating about who got the big bed, singing into a karaoke microphone, and losing water bottles, a single flip-flop, and various toy pieces. In addition to the high spots, there were some challenges, and the sturdiest brother ended the week by thanking a couple of us for helping him through a particularly hard time.
I don’t know why it is that these people who have been through so much still have such big hearts, for their siblings of course, but also for all of the people who help bring them together. I don’t know why, but I sure appreciate it, I admire them, and it is an incredibly life-affirming experience.
Please get involved any way you can – spread the word, volunteer at events, contribute financially. Bringing these siblings together, throughout the year, will do your heart good.
