GAR Highway Marker - Cambridge VT

GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC HIGHWAY – VT 15

Dedication of new roadside historical marker in Cambridge, VT

On May 18, 2025, a new official Vermont roadside historical marker will be dedicated to describe the role of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), the largest organization of Union veterans of the Civil War, and the 1937 designation of this highway honoring them. The ceremonies for this new marker will include a day of exhibits and lectures, a parade of reenactors to commemorate the Grand Revue held at the end of hostilities in 1865, and rededication of the refurbished monument to the local GAR post in Cambridge. In 1868, the GAR organized the national Memorial Day holiday to honor the many men who died in the conflict.

We are raising $15,000 for this event to cover the overall expenses of the venue in Cambridge; a luncheon, travel, and accommodations for dignitaries invited to the ceremony; and improvements to the GAR monument erected in 1918. The metal marker with post has been produced by the Vermont Office of Historic Preservation and installation will take place in May by the Town of Cambridge, both at no cost to the event organizers.
