Shadow came to us from a feedlot.  He was starving, wounded and has no top teeth.  Even though he had plenty of Hay at the feedlot, he could not chew it so he was literally starving to death in front of 1000 lbs of food.  He is a sweet loveable big guy and requires 20 lbs of soaked hay/grain per day.  Right now, we are feeding him 4 times per day with alternating soaked alfalfa pellets and soaked senior horse feed.  

We believe that Shadow has a gum disease called EORTH and if that is the case then the rest of his bottom teeth will need to be pulled to give him some relief from the pain and infection.  You can learn more about it here.

A bag of alfalfa is $21 and a bag of Senior feed is $29.75.  He eats a bag of each every 5 days so his feed costs us $10 per day.  That does not include his other incidentals such as shavings for his stall, farrier, vaccines, etc.
