April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month — a reminder that protecting children is not only a moral responsibility, but a critical public safety issue for Kaufman County.

Child abuse is a crime. It impacts classrooms, neighborhoods, churches, and ultimately the long-term safety and stability of our community. National research estimates that 1 in 8 children will experience sexual abuse before their 18th birthday. Locally, one in four reported child abuse cases last year resulted in a child being brought to the Children’s Advocacy Center for Kaufman County (CACKC) for a forensic interview.

Education, awareness, and early reporting reduce stigma and interrupt abuse sooner. Every adult has a role in recognizing warning signs, having age-appropriate safety conversations, and reporting concerns. Protecting children requires continued community commitment and investment. Child safety infrastructure — including forensic interviews, advocacy, and trauma therapy — is essential to maintaining a safe and thriving county.
