Stanley Hunt, born in 1954 in Victoria, British Columbia, is a celebrated Kwakiutl artist known for his traditional totem poles, masks, and paintings. Raised in Fort Rupert, Stanley trained under his father, Henry, who insisted he craft his own tools, such as the adze and carving knives. Using these handmade tools, Stanley creates authentic works from local materials, often prepared for ceremonial use in the Kwakiutl Big House.

Stanley’s heritage is rich with artistic influence: his father, Henry, and grandfather, Chief Mungo Martin, were both master carvers at the Royal British Columbia Museum and key figures in preserving Kwakiutl traditions, especially during the government-imposed potlatch ban. Following his family’s legacy, Stanley’s creations respect cultural protocols, including exclusive rights to family crests.

Stanley continues to inspire future generations, passing down his craft to his sons, Jason and Trevor, and embodying a commitment to sustaining Kwakiutl artistry and cultural continuity.
