South Carolina's Five Public OHV Trails Rebuilding Project after Hurricanes Debby and Helene

Southern Trail Advocates and Riders (STAR), also known as Wambaw Trail Riders, is a South Carolina–based 501(c)(3) tax exempt charity nonprofit dedicated to the stewardship, repair, and long-term sustainability of the state’s public off-highway vehicle (OHV) trail systems.

STAR now works in coordination with land managers, including the U.S. Forest Service and the South Carolina Forestry Commission, to support maintenance, restoration, and rebuilding efforts across all five South Carolina public OHV trail systems.

To expand this work statewide, STAR has applied for a major federal but state managed South Carolina Recreational Trails Program (SC RTP) grant to perform major projects on all five trails to include re-establishing drainage to avoid excessive closures, create emergency access points, updates to meet ADA compliance, other much needed updates and ongoing maintenance to name a few. RTP funding operates on a reimbursement basis—requiring project costs to be paid up front, with up to 80% reimbursed 30-60 days after work is completed. Community and partner support is essential to cover initial project costs and required matching funds.

There are no guarantees STAR will be awarded this grant, however, whether or not STAR is awarded this grant, our commitment remains unchanged: to responsibly manage, improve, and protect South Carolina’s OHV trails for riders, families, veterans, adaptive users, and future generations.

Donations made through this platform directly support trail maintenance, materials, equipment, professional services, and volunteer coordination. Contributions are leveraged to maximize impact and ensure safe, sustainable public access to OHV recreation throughout South Carolina.

Support through this campaign—whether from individual riders, charity rides, local businesses, or corporate partners—directly invests in the future of South Carolina’s public trails.

STAR does not receive guaranteed grant funding. Contributions help position projects for success regardless of award outcomes.

*STAR is a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit charitable organization. Your donation is tax deductible as allowed by law.
