Have you ever wanted to support a loved one going through hard times, but didn't know what to say or how to effectively provide care for them? It's hard to be of support to someone when you haven't experienced the same struggles as them. Empathy is key in relationships, especially when our loved ones are battling suicide.

I am working with Brain Health Bootcamp, an organization that seeks to implement suicide prevention training in communities nationwide. Their main program, Suicide Prevention and Outreach Training (SPOT), is an evidence-based research program that enables completers to effectively provide support to individuals battling suicidal ideations.

No matter how much we may think we know someone, the people we encounter day-to-day all have a battle they fight behind closed-doors. In a world where mental illnesses are heightened due to increased social media toxicity, it is time for a change where the wellness of our brains is protected.

According to our Alabama government, data has consistently shown higher rates of suicide in Alabama than our national average. In the United States, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for youth and young adults aged 10-34.

We must debunk the myth that "no one can stop suicide." The facts are clear:

• If a young person gets the help they need, they are less likely to be suicidal again.
• Asking about suicide lowers anxiety, opens up communication, and reduces the risk of impulsive
acts.
• Suicide is one of the most preventable kinds of death.

Most suicidal people communicate their intent at some point near their attempt, which makes it our responsibility to be of support when they need it most. The SPOT program empowers us with the knowledge to care for our community members. No matter your role, age, or vocation, you have influence on the people around you.

SPOT allows schools, leaders, and community members to increase mental health literacy, prevent suicide, and promote lifelong wellness for all peoples; mental health literacy reduces stigmas towards mental illnesses, creating safer environments for people to seek mental health treatment. SPOT saves lives.

In Auburn High School, 1 SPOT trained educator has the potential to save a life out of 2,091 students. This is only ONE school in Auburn. Imagine the potential lives that can be saved in all 13 different campuses when there is at least ONE SPOT trained educator in each location. 1 high school, 1 junior high, 2 middle schools, and 9 elementary schools. Where our friends, family, children, grandchildren, and loved ones attend.
