In 1961, a woman named Septima Poinsette Clark traveled from community to community, teaching Black adults to read so they could vote and be free. The phonics chart she used is now in the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called her the Mother of the Movement.

Sixty years later, Dr. Karen Bradford stood in front of that same chart and noticed something that stopped her: nine of the fourteen sounds at the heart of the literacy system she had spent years building were already on Septima's chart. Two Black women educators, six decades apart, had looked at the same children's needs and arrived at the same sounds.

That is not a coincidence. That is confirmation.

The literacy test did not disappear after 1965. It moved. Today, it lives in the third-grade classroom, the high school transcript, the job application, and every door a child will need to walk through in their lifetime. Black children are still being tested. And too many of them are arriving at that test without the phonological foundation they were never taught.

Not because they are behind. Because the system was not built for them.

Seed ED was.

The 14 Found Framework™ and the P.L.O.T.™ assessment were designed specifically to reflect the phonological patterns of Black children, honoring African American Language as an asset rather than a deficit. This is the only literacy system of its kind in the country. Patent pending. Science-backed. Planted in purpose.

This June, the Summer Seed Cohort launches: three age groups, PreK through Grade 8, six scholars each, six weeks of live structured literacy instruction delivered by the Seed ED team. Every scholar is assessed before and after. Every outcome is documented. For the first time, all of it runs together at scale.

The D.E.A.R. Campaign is raising $25,000 to fund two complete Summer Seed Cohorts, representing 36 scholars whose growth will become the first cohort-level evidence in Seed ED's evidence base. That data is not just a program report. It is the foundation of every grant application, every district conversation, and every door Seed ED will open after this summer.

The first seed has already been planted. Every tier below is a next step: a P.L.O.T.™ assessment, a family's complete Do-It-Yourself Kit, a scholar's seat, an age group, a full cohort, or two. There is a place for every level of investment in this work.

Cost will not be the reason a child stays stuck. Not this summer. Not on our watch.
