For several years, I have selected an organization to support in honor of my birthday because I've found it is a great way to amplify important causes. As you all know the COVID pandemic is hitting women, especially Black and Brown women, particularly hard, so I decided to shine a light on the work of the Downtown Women's Center. The Downtown Women's Center is the only organization in Los Angeles focused exclusively on serving and empowering women experiencing homelessness and formerly homeless women. Its mission is to end homelessness for women in greater Los Angeles through housing, wellness, and advocacy. Founded in 1978, DWC was the first permanent supportive housing provider for women in the U.S.

I'm celebrating a milestone birthday this year and wanted to do something a little splashy (because, in true Aquarius fashion, you know I'm a little extra right?!), so I am setting a goal of raising $5,000 for the Downtown Women's Center in honor of my 5th decade circling this planet. No contribution is too small (or too large!) as contributions of any amount will make an impact, so don't be shy! At the end of the month, I will close the gap with a personal contribution of $2,000 to reach the goal (unless you rock stars hit the $5,000 mark, in which case the DWC will get an influx of $7,000!!!).

All kidding aside, so many people have been impacted by COVID and nonprofits like DWC are filling the gap in providing both direct services, like food and shelter, as well as advocacy for funding and policy. So many organizations are worthy of support and it was hard to pick one, but with all my work supporting women over these last few years through the LA County Commission for Women and other groups, I thought DWC needed the focus today.
