Engather is a gift economy movement that is nurturing networks of unconditional mutual support across the Hudson Valley. In other words, we help people help each other.

We believe that by remembering our capacity to support one another and share skills and resources, we can knit back together the social fabric that makes us whole, nurturing a more vibrant and resourced community that requires less to thrive, while also deepening our place within community, and thus our sense of belonging.

Here's what that looks like:

Culture: Nurturing the conditions that allows mutual support to take root and grow. This looks like co-creating community agreements that are imbued in everything we do; rituals and consistent practices that help us orient to ways of giving and receiving that feels good and honors where we are at; offering programs to dive deeper into the psychology of community belonging so that folks can engage more easefully and joyfully.

Tech: Designing and launching tools that make sharing gifts and coordinating people and groups fun and easy.

DIY: Helping each other with work around land and home, from building garden beds and weeding, to making small repairs and improvements.

Food: Sharing skills, knowledge, and resources to make cooking a more connected, creative, and cost effective part of life.

Clothing: Mending and upcycling clothes together, organizing clothing swaps, and sharing sewing & mending skills with one another.

Joy: Creating more opportunities for shared delight and play, through activities like group singing, game nights, and community scavenger hunts.

We are fundraising to grow our team and expand our capacity for the next 3 years. The need, excitement, and people are there: with every initiative we take at Engather, we receive an exponential return on our investment, which often looks like folks coming back, bringing their friends, and offering themselves more generously to support this community. We have taken root in the Hudson Valley and are ready for sustained growth.

Building a viable, large scale gift economy is no easy task.

We are pioneering an effort to remember and revive a new yet ancient way of being.

This is a highly manual and relational process. It requires humans to be supported in a financially dominated world so we can transmute that financial capital into social capital.
